🦄📚 Read Across America Week at Greenwood Elementary! Students enjoyed a special guest reader, Ms. Thelma Orr, Zeta Phi Beta sorority alum, who shared “Thelma the Unicorn” — the story of a horse named Thelma and the lesson of staying true to who you are. Thank you to Greenwood media specialist Ms. Pace for coordinating the visit! You’ll spot her running the Book Fair in one photo and pictured with our guest reader in another. We appreciate Ms. Orr for bringing this meaningful story to life for our students. 💙✨ #ReadAcrossAmerica #SCPSProud

📚🎉 Read Across America Week is officially underway at SCPS! 🎉📚 Students at Deal Island Elementary had a very special surprise guest reader to help kick things off — none other than the Cat in the Hat! 🐱🎩 Our own Ms. Lily Welch, Elementary ELA Supervisor, brought smiles, laughter, and a love of reading to DIS classrooms yesterday as she shared a story to celebrate Read Across America Week. Moments like these remind us that reading is not just a skill — it’s an adventure. ✨ A special thank you to Ms. Welch for helping make this celebration memorable for our Deal Island students! #SCPSProud #ReadAcrossAmerica #LoveOfReading

Out of an abundance of caution due to forecasted inclement weather this evening, students will be bringing their school-issued devices home today, Monday, March 2, 2026.
If weather conditions require us to convert tomorrow into a virtual instruction day, students will be prepared to continue learning from home. We will continue to monitor weather conditions closely and will communicate any schedule changes through our normal notification channels.

Happy Read Across America Week! 📖❤️

This week (March 2–6, 2026), we celebrate the joy of reading, the power of storytelling, and the lifelong opportunities that literacy creates for our students.

Across our schools, classrooms will be filled with guest readers, themed spirit days, book character celebrations, and plenty of time spent turning pages and growing imaginations. Whether it’s a picture book in kindergarten or a novel discussion in high school, every page matters.

We encourage families to join the celebration at home — read together, talk about favorite books, and help us continue building a strong culture of literacy in our community.
