Activity: Spread a small blanket on the floor in a safe space. Place your baby on their tummy for short periods while staying close by. Position a soft toy, mirror, or book just within reach to encourage head lifting and reaching. Talk or sing to your baby while they explore.
Why It Matters: Tummy time is one of the most important early exercises. It strengthens neck, back, and shoulder muscles that babies need for rolling, crawling, and eventually walking. It also promotes visual tracking as your baby looks around, and builds trust and social connection when you engage with them during the activity.
Adaptations:
Newborns: Keep sessions very short (1–2 minutes) and let baby rest on your chest instead of the floor.
6+ months: Increase tummy time to longer play sessions, placing toys slightly farther away to encourage scooting or crawling.
