At the May 20, 2025, Somerset County Board of Education meeting, district leaders shared a presentation outlining the process and findings from this year’s pilot of two high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) for Secondary (grade 6 - 12) English Language Arts (ELA): HMH Into Literature and Savvas My Perspectives.
This curriculum pilot was launched after the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) rated Somerset's current ELA curriculum with a score of 2, indicating a need for significant revisions. In response, SCPS conducted a comprehensive review process, including collaboration with teachers, training sessions, and classroom implementation of both programs—Into Literature during Semester 1 and My Perspectives during Semester 2.
Teachers across grade levels, including Special Education and ESOL staff, provided valuable feedback on the instructional design, student engagement, writing components, digital platforms, and assessment tools of each curriculum.
Survey results indicate that 70% of participating educators recommend Savvas My Perspectives, while 59% support HMH Into Literature.
