January 21, 2026 (Westover, MD) - At the January 20, 2026 meeting, the Somerset County Board of Education recognized six educators from Somerset County Public Schools through a formal Board Recognition for earning National Board Certification, one of the most rigorous and respected professional credentials in education.

National Board Certification is a voluntary, advanced certification process that recognizes educators who demonstrate deep content knowledge, effective instructional practices, and a strong commitment to continuous professional growth.

To earn this distinction, candidates must successfully complete four comprehensive components that evaluate classroom instruction, student learning, assessment practices, and reflective professionalism. The process includes a content knowledge assessment, analysis of student work and instructional impact, video-recorded classroom teaching, and evidence of collaboration with families and colleagues.

The educators recognized represent the largest cohort of National Board Certified educators to date in Somerset County Public Schools, earning certification in December 2025.

The following educators were honored:

  • Myresha Bevins – Family and Consumer Science and Musical Theatre Teacher, Washington Academy and High School

  • Jennifer Carey – Reading Intervention Teacher, Carter G. Woodson Elementary School

  • Joanne Evans – Pre-Kindergarten Teacher, Carter G. Woodson Elementary School

  • Allison Grove – 5th Grade Teacher, Carter G. Woodson Elementary School

  • Savanna Hoffman – Kindergarten Teacher, Carter G. Woodson Elementary School

  • Janet Wilkins – Reading Intervention Teacher, Carter G. Woodson Elementary School

The Board of Education and SCPS leadership commends these educators for their dedication to professional excellence and for their positive impact on students, schools, and the broader Somerset County community.
