PRINCESS ANNE, MD (October 25, 2024) – Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) recently hosted a SC Johnson Professional to provide floor care training using SC Johnson’s line of environmentally-friendly commercial floorcare products at Washington Academy & High School. SCPS’ Department of Operations recently changed its floorcare maintenance protocol to lessen the school system’s impact on the environment and align with the Green Cleaning Initiative.
Staff took part in removing old wax from VCT Tile and Terrazzo Flooring, cleaning with a neutral cleaner and prepping the floors with SC Johnson’s EZ-Care Floor Coating. Embracing these new floor care products will move SCPS from traditional waxes and strippers to a more environmentally-friendly floor care program that reduces labor hours and the amount of product required annually to maintain school floors, county-wide.
“Green Cleaning” is the name given to cleaning protocols that provide a maximum level of cleanliness and minimal harm to the environment, building occupants, and custodial staff. The Somerset County Board of Education adopted a Green Cleaning Policy in 2018, a component within the Maryland Green Cleaning Schools Act Annotated Code of Maryland §5-112, which requires schools to the extent practicable and economically feasible, to purchase and use environmentally-sensitive cleaning supplies.
