WESTOVER, MD, May 22, 2023 – The Somerset Board of Education welcomed new member, Mr. Alverne “Chet” Chesterfield, representing Somerset County’s District 2. Chesterfield was recently appointed by Governor Moore after the resignation of Board Vice Chairman, Mr. Caleb Shores. Sworn in by the Somerset County Commissioners earlier in the month, Chesterfield attended his first regular meeting of the Somerset Board of Education on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. 

Although a native of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, Chesterfield has been a resident of the Lower Eastern Shore for most of his life, having relocated to Somerset County in 1973 to attend the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Chesterfield holds a B.S in Business Administration from UMES in 1977, a M.S. in Management & Public Administration from Wilmington University of Delaware in 1994, and is currently pursuing his PhD in Organizational Leadership at UMES. Chesterfield retired in 2013 from UMES having served 36 years in leadership roles in the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Administrative Affairs Department of Auxiliary Enterprises, and as Adjunct Faculty for the Department of Business & Economics. He currently serves as the Executive Director for the Chincoteague Bay Field Station in Wallops Island, Virginia.

Chesterfield is a resident of Princess Anne and is a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church where he serves as a Trustee. One of his passions was cooking for the YES Youth Program at the church. Chesterfield shared, “As a new board member, I look forward to meeting and working with the Somerset County Public Schools community. While there is still much to learn, I am committed to serving in this capacity for the benefit of all students in Somerset County.”
