In the Fall of 2014, the Somerset County Board of County Commissioners approved for the new "Shore Up! Crisfield Head Start Center" to be co-located at the existing Crisfield Academy and High School. The project design, completed by Becker Morgan Group, Inc. of Salisbury, MD, consists of renovations to existing unused instructional space and the existing women's locker room to accommodate the Head Start program. A minor addition and renovations to the existing weight room and men's locker room area will provide new spaces for the High School’s athletic facilities (locker rooms, weight room, coaches’ and trainer’s offices, etc.). Funding for this project comes from two sources: the MD Public School Construction Program and the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Block Grant awarded to the County as a result of the damage from Hurricane Sandy to the H. Dewayne Whittington Primary building, a former Elementary School now owned by the County. The Construction Manager for the project is The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company of Salisbury, MD. After a series of bidding and value engineering exercises the project is now within the budget of around $4,000,000 and ready to move forward. Construction will begin the second week of March 2017 and continue through October 2017. The project will be phased so that the Head Start facility will be open by the end of August 2017.
