Maryland state law, and federal law, require students to take just a handful of tests as they advance through school. Maryland’s local school districts have the option to expand the list of tests students must take or can take, which are appropriate to the grade level. Our local school systems define the curriculum that they believe is best for communities and students. Neither the state nor the federal government tells us what to teach—or how to teach. The beauty of the standards is that they show all of us what we’re aiming to achieve, grade by grade. Together, we figure out the best way to get there.
