Fall 2022 Flu & Cold Season Reminders

With cold and flu season upon us, we are seeing an increase in student and staff absences due to "Influenza-Like-Illness" or ILI, with symptoms like fever over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, cough and sore throat.

Please help us prevent the spread of influenza, colds and other respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 this fall by staying home or keeping your student home when sick. Sick individuals should not return to school until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing drugs. Students and staff that display signs of illness during the school day will be evaluated by the school nurse and sent home as appropriate.

While our custodial staff continues to sanitize high-touch surfaces and restrooms on an hourly basis, please encourage your student to wash their hands often with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Remind your children to not share personal items like drinks, food, or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues, or the inside of the elbow or arm instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable. And finally, be sure to schedule your family's flu vaccinations and other important immunizations this fall. For more information, please contact the Somerset County Health Department at 443-523-1700.
