Somerset BOE Honors Hardwire, LLC for Emergency Response Shield Donation

WESTOVER, MD, September 22, 2022 – The Somerset Board of Education recently honored local armor manufacturer, Hardwire, LLC of Pocomoke City, MD for generously donating 284 Emergency Response Shields to be installed in all nine of the public school system’s buildings. This is part of a larger donation which also outfits all public schools in Worcester and Wicomico counties. George and Emily Tunis of Hardwire attended the September 20 board meeting to be recognized for their donation and for taking action after observing a nationwide uptick in school violence in recent years.

The Emergency Response Shields, weighing approximately 24 lbs., are anticipated to arrive in October and will be accessible throughout all buildings, placed every 75 feet beside each fire extinguisher. The shields stop ammunition rounds from assault rifles (including green tip rounds), shotguns and handguns, and can also offer protection against blades and blunt force weapons. In the event of an attack, Hardwire’s shields provide a critical layer of protection in an emergency when escape is not an option and first responders have not yet arrived.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Gaddis shared, “We are incredibly grateful to Hardwire, LLC for this generous donation of Emergency Response Shields. While I wish we didn’t need them, and I hope we never have to use them, just having these in our schools will be a deterrent for violent attacks and give students, parents and staff some comfort knowing that we have one more layer of protection in an emergency.”
