SCPS to Add 5 School Resource Officers in 2022-2023

Westover, MD, July 14, 2022 – Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) recently announced the addition of five (5) new School Resource Officer (SRO) positions through the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department for assignment in school buildings, with hope that some or all will be filled for the 2022-2023 school year. On July 12, 2022, the Somerset County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the additional SRO positions, funded jointly by Somerset County, SCPS and The Maryland Center for School Safety. Partner agencies came to this decision in response to a nationwide increase in school violence in recent months.

SCPS currently has four full-time SRO’s; one at Crisfield Academy & High School, one at Somerset Intermediate School, and two at Washington Academy & High School. Four of the five additional SRO’s will be assigned to Carter G. Woodson Elementary School, Deal Island Elementary School, Greenwood Elementary School and Princess Anne Elementary School. The fifth officer will oversee all SRO’s, and move between schools to provide assistance as needed.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Gaddis shared, “The most recent tragedy in Uvalde, TX reminds us that school violence isn’t just a middle or high school problem. It was important to our Board of Education, County Commissioners and our school community to add School Resource Officers to protect our elementary school students and staff; particularly in Deal Island where it could take 20 minutes or more for law enforcement to respond due to its remote location in the county.”

In addition to the placement of new SRO’s, SCPS school administrators will receive refresher school safety and crisis response training over the summer.
