On Friday, February 22, 2008 at 2:00, Deal Island School held its annual Black History Month Program.
Mrs. Polk emceed the event which included two very special guests - Mr. Clarence Bell and Judge Gerald V. Purnell.
Mr. Bell gave a spell-binding rendition of an excerpt of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech that
was delivered August 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
Judge Purnell, who has been an Associate Judge for the District Court of Maryland, District 2, Worcester County since January 12, 2006
gave a wonderfully inspiring message about following, and not limiting, your hopes and dreams.
Our students also further enhanced the program with songs and readings.
Thanks to all who planned and participated in this memorable event!
Mr. Brady organized our Jump Rope For Heart event that was held on Friday, February 15, 2008 at 1:30.
As a school, we raised a total of $3687.91, $500 of that total was donated by the PTO!!
We also had an amazing 87% participation rate by the students.
What is
Jump Rope For Heart?
Jump Rope For Heart is a national educational
fund-raising program that is sponsored
by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). This program engages elementary students in a physical activity (jumping rope)
while raising funds to support lifesaving heart
and stroke research.

Maryland Science Center Visits Deal Island School
On October 24, the Maryland Science Center came to give an exciting demonstration during their 2007-08 Traveling Science Program.
