SCHOOL NURSE - DEAL ISLAND SCHOOL

August 29, 2002

SUMMARY OF DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:

The school nurse position is directly responsible for working with all students who require school health services.

QUALIFICATION:

A. Educational Requirements - Minimum of License Practical Nurse Degree from an accredited institution. Must have a current Maryland Nursing License.

B. Knowledge & Skill Requirements

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of current medical and nursing standards of care.
  2. Has good interpersonal skills.
  3. Must possess excellent human relation skills.
  4. Must be able to provide health counseling, when necessary.
  5. Must posses good time management and organizational skills.

C. Duties

  1. Administers basic first aid when needed and responds to emergency situations when appropriate.
  2. Monitors and reviews all health records, including the compliance of all immunizations according to the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  3. Evaluates and follows up referrals received from teachers and principals as appropriate. Keeps administrators advised of problems within their building and advises appropriate action to be taken.
  4. Makes home visits when necessary to work out problems relating to health and environmental situations affecting students.
  5. Acts as a liaison between school, home and community agencies in regards to health related problems.
  6. Serves as a resource person for health education activities.
  7. Organizes and implements various screening programs and initiates referrals of students as appropriate.
  8. Identifies students with chronic health problems (i.e., Sickle Cell Anemia, Epilepsy, Diabetes, etc.), alerts the classroom teacher and advises as to the intervention in case of a crisis. Maintains individualized Nursing Care Plans for those students and updates them annually.
  9. Assists in the identification and control of communicable diseases in the schools.
  10. Recommends the purchase of health supplies for distribution to the schools.
  11. Attends meetings relative to health as appropriate.
  12. Coordinates appropriate inservice activities for school staff.
  13. Establishes a first aid center in each school.
  14. Monitors compliance with policies and procedures as established in the Maryland School Health Standards.
  15. Keeps a record of health room visits and health related incidents. Complies and report these statistics as requested by the nurse manager.
  16. Teaches health classes for teachers when requested and approved by the principal.
  17. Participates in multi-disciplinary teams (IEP Meetings, Pupil Services Team, Crisis Intervention Teams, etc.). Member of school's Crisis Team..
  18. Adheres to Somerset County medication policy.
  19. Responsible for implementing staff inservice on health related issues. The Somerset County Health Department will serve as a resource.
  20. Maintains staff emergency forms.
  21. Keeps all health information confidential.
  22. Reports problems to building principal and nurse manager or RN on call.
  23. Consults with nurse manager on any questions regarding medications or health room policies or procedures.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned by the superintendent of schools.
