READING SPECIALISTS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Somerset County Public Schools is accepting applications for 10 ½ month Reading Specialists for Greenwood Middle and Woodson Middle Schools
Summary of Description of Classification
The Reading Specialist position is directly responsible for working with students, parents and school personnel to enable all students to achieve reading skills at or above grade level.
Qualifications:
A. Educational Requirements - A Master's Degree in reading or the equivalent course work. Consideration will be given to candidates who are pursuing a Masters Degree in reading or the equivalent course work. The candidate should have course work in assessment and remediation of reading difficulties, content area reading, basic reading methods, organization and supervision of a reading program and children's literature.
B. Training and Experience Requirements - At least three years of classroom teaching experience teaching reading and language arts, preferably in the primary grades. The candidate should have worked with students who have had difficulty learning to read in either rural or urban settings.
C. Knowledge and Skill Requirements -
| The Reading Specialist should have the ability to work well with others, teach cooperatively with teachers in the regular classroom and provide assistance and staff development. | |
| The Reading Specialist should
be well organized and be able to supervise others who assist in the reading
program, especially instructional assistants. |
D. Duties -
| The Reading Specialist will provide leadership in reading/language arts instruction for the building. | |
| The Reading Specialist will teach reading in an in-class intervention program to small groups of children in the primary grades. The reading specialists will be responsible for designing the reading instruction of children struggling to learn to read, assessing their progress and modifying the instructional programs as needed. Teaching will represent 70% of the job. | |
| The Reading Specialist will
be responsible for the training and supervision of instructional
assistants who support reading instruction. | |
| The Reading Specialist will
be responsible for monitoring the reading assessments in the school,
organizing reading data and reporting it to the principal and the
teachers. | |
| The Reading Specialist will
provide ongoing staff development in reading, model lessons in the
classroom and provide inservice workshops. |
